Home Hogar/Casa Community Education

Community Education

The community educational courses and programs offered at the Hogar/Casa vary according to community requests and needs. Examples include:

  • Entrepreneurial and small business courses such as haircutting certification, cake decorating, accounting and computer skills.
  • English language and Spanish literature classes.
  • Stress reduction and wellness classes such as aerobics, self-esteem and folk dance.
  • Primary and secondary adult education courses.
  • Week-long educational kids’ camps with themes such as environment, health and the body,
    family violence and drug awareness.

Workshop Updates

  • The Grammar and High School Equivalency Classes and testing have risen from an average of 30 or 40 students to 125 students. This is a direct result of the economic crisis. People are desperate to get jobs and come to the Casa seeking tools that help them find work.
  • Recently, a workshop was held in conjunction with the staff from the Community Food Bank of Tucson was a big hit with the people at Casa de Misericordia. Forty-five people attended the workshop entitled, "We Are What We Eat." After helping plant the community garden, each parent and child took home their own plant.
  • Participation in workshops for Casa home stay families is mandatory if they want to receive BorderLinks delegations.  Another workshop, "Knowing Nogales, Knowing Myself," is planned.
