Previously called the "Casa de Misericordia," our center in Nogales developed in the mid-1980s by Nogales, Sonora, Mexico residents Jose and Hope Torres. The initial purpose of the Casa was to create a large cafeteria space to cook and serve daily free hot lunches for hundreds of low income children from the surrounding neighborhood. In 1999, BorderLinks purchased the Casa de la Misericordia.
Today, it functions as a community resource center with programs centering on education, community action, and direct service, in addition to serving as the central office and dormitory facility for BorderLinks’ Delegations Program in Mexico.
In order to help the Casa become more autonomous and seek funding from within Mexico, we are currently in a transition period. Under the name, the "Hogar de Esperanza y Paz," this great resource for Nogales is continuing (and will continue) to function in all aspects. If you would like to read more about our transition, please visit our February Mailer page. And don't forget to donate!
