BorderLinks Newsletter and Response to SB1070

Our BorderLinks Spring 2010 Newsletter, highlighting our Annual Women on the Border Event and interviews with BorderLinks staff and volunteers is now available online.  If you didn't get a copy in the mail, feel free to read it here or even print some out and distribute them on your own.

BorderLinks' response to SB1070

Friends,
sb1070
In light of the recent signing into law of SB1070, we couldn't let this mailing go to press without asking for your help.  With the passing of this, the most fear and hate filled immigration law yet, and President Obama's immediate and stern warning about the law's implications, BorderLinks' education for transformation is ever more important.

SB1070 dramatically expands police powers to stop, questions, and detain individuals for not having proper identification, essentially guaranteeing racial profiling, the criminalization of undocumented people, and the creation of panic and fear amongst vulnerable communities.

SB1070 makes it illegal for anyone, including family, to be in the company of an undocumented person, to hire or solicit work from undocumented, and to "transport, harbor or conceal" undocumented migrants.  This also could be interpreted to include medical personnel, teachers, ministers, and social and humanitarian aid workers.

President Obama immediately came out with a stern warning about this new Arizona law.  He recognized that inaction on immigration at the federal level leads to these kinds of laws as the state level and he has pledged to have the Department of Justice look into the legality of this new policy.

Now, more than ever, we need to create an educated electorate capable of compassionate, just, and comprehensive immigration reform.  Please help us to do so by considering a BorderLinks delegation or through a monetary donation.
