Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers are the lifeblood of a not-for-profit organization. At BorderLinks, volunteers offer invaluable contributions, donating their time as board and committee members, office assistants, manual laborers, or envelope stuffers, to name just a few. If you are interested in helping us further our mission of building relationships between North and Latin Americans, there may be a place for you at BorderLinks.

Volunteer positions are available at the BorderLinks office in Tucson and, for those willing to travel to Nogales, Sonora, on a regular basis, at the BorderLinks' sister facility, la Casa de la Misericordia, in Mexico.

US Positions (click for US Volunteer Application Form)

Volunteers are regularly needed to assist US staff with office administration, trip logistics, data entry, in-kind donations and special projects, including event planning and fundraising, and designing promotional materials, such as calendars, brochures, and trip follow-up materials, etc.

December Mailing

Volunteers needed for December Mailing Nov. 27-29 starting at 9 a.m. Lunch will be provided. Mailing will take place at Southside Presby Church in the library. Please RSVP with Eloise Federickson at eloisef@aol.com.

General Office Assistant:

Office volunteers provide support on a regularly scheduled basis during normal office hours. Duties include answering telephones and fielding requests for information, photocopying, filing, assisting with mailings and any other office projects as needed. Familiarity with office procedures and equipment is helpful. Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus. Morning and afternoon shifts (4 hours each) are available.

Data Entry Assistant:

This position works closely with the development director to support BorderLinks' fundraising activities. Duties include entering information about trip participants into BorderLinks' database, formatting and printing labels for mailings, and other duties as assigned by the development director. Time commitment is about 10 hours a week and may be flexibly scheduled.

BorderLinks Trip Angel:

"Angels" are assigned to scheduled BorderLinks delegations to assist staff leaders with trip preparation and follow-up. Duties include administrative support, such as photocopying and telephone follow-up, purchase of groceries and meal preparation for visiting groups, and cleaning of van at trip's end. Bilingual "angels" may provide translation support and those interested in driving may be called upon to chauffeur a delegation. Time commitments vary depending on the trip assigned.

In-kind Donations Coordinator:

Volunteers sort and organize clothing and used items donated to BorderLinks for use at the Casa de la Misericordia in Nogales. Volunteers then transport usable donations to a BorderLinks storage facility in Nogales, Arizona. This project usually requires a commitment of about one day per month.

Special Projects:

Periodically throughout the year, BorderLinks requires help with a special project or event. For example, volunteers are needed to assist with organizing the annual fundraising dinner in November. For the Casa de la Misericordia Christmas party, volunteers are needed as early as October to begin seeking donations of toys and cookies. In addition, BorderLinks schedules three mass mailings annually and needs assistance with stuffing and sealing envelopes. Click here for an office volunteer information form.

Program Assistants:

Casa de la Misericordia offers educational programs for local Nogales residents, including primary and secondary school tutoring, English as a Second Language, sewing, gardening, guitar lessons, art for children and bicycle repair. If you have a skill you would like to share at the Casa, have your own transportation, and can commit to a regular weekday schedule, contact Jeannette at Jeannette2@borderlinks.org.

Service Learning:

Short-term (day or weekend-long) opportunities are available for groups or individuals to participate in service projects at the Casa de la Misericordia in Nogales, Sonora. Projects typically involve manual labor and have included construction, painting, clean-up and the like. A small fee is requested to cover transportation and staff time. For more information on scheduling a service-learning trip for your group, contact Program@borderlinks.org. BorderLinks also schedules periodic trips to accommodate interested individuals.

On-site Volunteers:

BorderLinks occasionally places bilingual volunteers at the Casa de la Misericordia in Nogales, Sonora. Placements are up to two months' in duration and are highly dependent on the skills a volunteer can offer vis-à-vis the current needs at the facility. Those selected will be provided dormitory-style sleeping accommodations and some meals. There is no financial support available. Click here for an application form. All applicants are subject to management approval. For more information, contact Program@borderlinks.org.
