BorderLinks II Programs Engage at a Deeper Level

After nearly 20 years of facilitating trips to the US/Mexico border under our Delegations Program, we are excited to announce that BorderLinks has now expanded our educational programs. Developed as a second tier of our education department, BorderLinks II Programs are specially designed to offer unique opportunities for both returning participants who have previously engaged in a BorderLinks program and for first time participants looking for an alternative to the BorderLinks delegation experience.

BorderLinks II Programs are designed for the following purposes: to target specific populations, such as our Educator’s Seminar; to respond to particular group interests and themes, such as our JustArts program; to extend beyond the Arizona/Mexico border by bringing participants to new locations, such as the Chiapas program; or to delve deeper into particular border-related issues.

We also invite you to contact us with new ideas and/or suggestions for broadening our programs to meet your special border interests.

July 28 - Aug. 2, 2008   Faith and Justice on the Border Delegation

BorderLinks invites you to join other people of faith to experience, reflect, and worship together on the U.S.-Mexico border.  The “Faith and Justice on the Border” Delegation will provide a platform for participants to explore border issues with clergy and lay from various faith backgrounds.  We will discern how our faith calls us to act on the border and beyond.  Core themes explored include: Biblical reflections, the migrant experience, border militarization and security, the church as an agent of change, free trade and global economics, human rights and labor conditions, desert spirituality and faith-based humanitarian movements. Cost is $750, excluding travel to and from Tucson.

Contact BorderLinks Education Associate, Lil Mattingly, MM or call 520-628-8263 for further information.

August 13-17 and Dec. 18-22, 2008  Border Studies Seminar for Educators

Back by popular demand, the Border Studies Seminar for Educators will bring together educators – professors, teachers, students of education, education administrators, etc. – from all around the US to participate in a BorderLinks border immersion experience. This seminar will provide a platform for educators to see, experience, discuss and reflect on border issues with colleagues in the field of education. Explore the root causes of migration and its subsequent impacts on individuals and communities. Speak with fellow educators along the border to discuss the effect of immigration policy on education in the borderlands and beyond.  Brainstorm ideas on how to address these issues in and out of the classroom. Cost is $600, excluding travel to and from Tucson. Contact BorderLinks Education Coordinator, Heather Craigie

October 31 - November 9, 2008 Chiapas, Mexico Delegation

Explore root causes of immigration, alternative practices for sustainable development, and ways in which we can work on a local and global level to effect positive and lasting change. This 10-day delegation to San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas, will put a human face on global economic policies and practices that lead people to risk everything to come to the US in search of work. Chiapas, one of the poorest states in Mexico and a border state with Guatemala, is the home of many migrants who cross through the Tucson, Arizona sector. Having lived and worked in Chiapas for four years, BorderLinks’ Executive Director, Reverend Delle McCormick, will co-lead this special delegation. Delle’s previous experience in Chiapas building relationships with communities and individuals will afford participants the opportunity to "convivir" -- to spend time meeting, eating with and getting to know the people of Chiapas.

Common themes explored during this delegation include global economics, immigration, indigenous spirituality, healing and transforming violence, and women's issues. Visits will include individuals and organizations in the beautiful colonial village of San Cristóbal de las Casas and in two rural Mayan communities. Cost: $1,575 and includes roundtrip airfare from Mexico City to Chiapas, Mexico. Please note, cost does not include roundtrip airfare expenses from participants' home locations to Mexico City.  A deposit of $500 is required to reserve a space. Contact Fernanda Morillon or call 520-628-8263.
