Casa Misericordia

Our dream of purchasing the Casa Misericordia in Nogales has become a reality.

More than four hundred people contributed with gifts of five dollars to fifty thousand dollars. We raised over three hundred thousand dollars to purchase, renovate and expand the work of the Casa, and to provide a secure financial base for the rest of the work.

BorderLinks' Mexican nonprofit organization signed the papers to take possession of the property.

Long-term Casa volunteers continue to arrive each morning to prepare a meal for the three hundred children who come for lunch. Our staff continues to work hard at expanding the work of the Casa into an integrated community and retreat center offering community service, leadership development and experiential education seminars.

Faith and community action

The Sisters from the Missionaries of the Eucharist who joined our staff in 1998 have been working with parish priests in Nogales to develop small, church based Bible study groups. Their purpose is not just to read the Bible, but to study the Biblical tradition together in light of their own life experiences and to take action to improve their communities because their faith demands it. To the best of our knowledge, such an organizing attempt has never been tried in Nogales before, but recently more than one hundred and fifty people participated in the Sisters' training programs.
